Keeping up to date
Keeping up-to-date
I regularly spend time with the GP while he/she is in the clinic. We will go over cases I want advice on, blood test results, plans I have for patients and want reassurance that I am not missing anything or need to include. I have recently spent a number of afternoons sitting in with the GP-Dr while he sees the patient (I am invisible- and I don’t engage with the patient ) This has been a lot of fun. I have learned many gems from my esteemed GP colleague and will be always grateful to his openess to have me sit in on his consultations. I must say the patients enjoyed it.
I use Peer review as another forum to discuss cases that I need clarity on. Again this is extremely useful. I attend all GP/NP education meetings and also attend two conferences a year that have a very clinical focus. (Sth GP CME and the Rural General Practice conference).
I listen to the Goodfellow podcasts which are very useful and enlightening and are a great way of keeping up to date with the latest best evidence based practice.
I read the NZ Doctor- Clinical articles which are very relevant and useful in practice. Other articles I get through email include the BMJ and research review.
Another means up upskilling is through teaching nursing students. I have number of post grad nurses for whom I provide clinical supervision. By explaining to the other, I am reiterating this knowledge for myself.
